6 Electronic Exercises in 3 8 & 11 is a personal tutorial; a reintroduction to electronic music after a 30 year absence. It's the first in a series of strategies to develop a working musical vocabulary.
After concocting a keyboard chart loosely based on 12 tone theory, I randomly selected 3 note positions 3, 8 and 11, as a creative boundary, to explore possibilities within a limitation. Additional notes were added when the motif called for it. After all, rules should respond to the muse.
Each song approaches the notes in different ways from the previous choice. Admittedly, there are some classic swirly ambient tonal washes. But, hey.... it's electronic and that lends itself to churning repetition. If you look at it, though, most contemporary compositions are based on simple repetition and basic structures that support lyrics and the performing artist's temperament.
So these songs, without lyrics or "analog intimacy", are my attempts to bring melody, warmth and a little humor to the genre in a way that I rarely but deeply yearn to hear. Essentially, I'm taking a new approach to music that I can enjoy.
